Aim: The course is intended to give the basic knowledge of optoelectronic devices and fiber optics to be able to understand todayés and tomorrowés standard methods in optical communication and sensor technology. The goal is to give the student enough knowledge about optoelectronics to understand the possibilities and limitations this technology gives.Prerequisites: The course TFFY34 Semiconductor Technology is desirable, but not compulsory.Course organization: The course will be given in the form of lectures (including some guest lectures), problem solving classes as well as laboratory experiments in small groups.Course content: - Basic optics: Polarisation, absorption, dispersion and reflection - Photometry and radiometry - Optical modulation; electro-optic, magneto-optic and acousto-optic effects - Nonlinear optics - Basic semiconductor physics; electronic properties, radiative recombination - Light emitting diodes; electroluminescence, materials for IR and visible light, structures and characteristics - Lasers; spontaneous/stimulated emission, modes, laser types - Semiconductor lasers, heterojunction, quantum well laser, surface emitting lasers - Photodetectors, photoconductors, photodiodes, solar cells, thermal detectors, noise in detectors, CCD camera - Displays; Liquid crystals - Waveguides; Planar dielectrics - Optical fibers, design, materials, modes, attenuation, dispersion, coupling and jointing - Optical amplifiers, semiconductor amplifiers, Er-doped fiberamplifiers - Optical communication systems - Fiber-optical sensors - Integrated optics - Future fiberoptical systems; solitons, optical logic | ||
