TBME60 Systems Physiology, ECTS-points
/SYSTEMFYSIOLOGI/

Advancement level:
C

Aim:
The course provides a basic knowledge of the different functions of the human body with special reference to regulatory mechanisms. The subject is studied from an engineering perspective, utilising mathematical models and simulation techniques for examining properties and behaviour of physiological systems. The course aims at giving sufficient knowledge about anatomy and physiology for further studies in the field. A major part of the course is tough by teachers with a solid background in the medical field.

Prerequisites:
TFBI10 Cell Biology

Course organization:
Lectures and seminars (66h), laboratory experiments and project work (24h).

Course content:
System physiology as concept. Modelling and simulation of physiological systems. Medical terminology. Organ systems of the body: bone-, skeletal- and muscle tissue, nervous system, special senses, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, digestive system, reproductive system. Neurophysiology: the nervous system, muscel physiology, genesis of EEG, EMG, ECG, measurement techniques. Circulatory system: the heart, heamodynamics, blood preassure regulation, modelling and measurement techniques. Respiratory system: the lungs, gas exchange, respiratory regulation, measurement techniques. Body heat regulation, the digestive and urinary system, regulation of body fluids. Laboratory experiment: circulatory and respiratory measurements, modelling and simulation of parts of the cardiovascular system.
