Aim: The course provides basic knowledge about the finite difference method for the solution of partial differential equations. The course also gives practical familarity with numerical computations on computers with examples taken from science and technology.Prerequisites: TANA50 Numerical Methods IISupplementary courses: TANA77 Scientific computationsCourse content: Heat conduction with or without Convection. Classification of partial differential equations. Well posed initial value problems. Difference approximations. Local truncation error. Consistency, stability and convergence. Lax theorem. Parabolic equations: Explicit and implicit methods. Equations with two space variables. Elliptic equations: The maximum principle. Difference approximations. Gaussian Elimination, multigrid methods and iterative methods. Hyperbolic equations: The method of Characteristics and difference methods. Dissipation and Dispersion.
