Aim: The course aims at giving basic knowledge within the area of surface physics and chemistry of solid surfaces, including chemical reaction kinetics and heterogeneous catalysis.Prerequisites: Participation in Molecular physics, Thermodynamics, Quantum mechanics and Solid state physics within the "Physics programme".Course organization: The course is given as lectures and laboratory exercises. The course is given in English if required.Course content: Clean surfaces: thermodynamics, crystal structure, electron structure, experimental methods of characterization. Adsorption: physisorption chemisorption thermodynamics, adsorption isotherms, experimental methods of characterization. Reaction kinetics: surface reactions, Rideal-Eley and Langmuir-Hinshelwood reactions, basic heterogeneous catalysis, experimental methods of characterization.Course literature: A.
