NBIA01 Cell Biology, ECTS-points
/CELLBIOLOGI/

Advancement level:
A

Aim:
The aim of the course is to give partially an introduction into biology from a historical, evolutionary and systematical point of view and partially contribute ith basic knowledge about the structure and function of the cell. Another important aim is to increase the skills within basic, biological methodology.

Prerequisites:
General Chemistry 1, 2 and 3 (NKEA 11, 12 and 13).

Course organization:
The course includes lectures which give a summary of the subject and in certain degrees completes and/or explains the course literature. Studying and comprehension of the theory is made easier with help of studyproblems7computerprograms which are studied separately or in group. A great part of the course exists of laboratory work which exemplifies the theory and which result is presented and discussed at seminars. The course includes, furthermore, team work of practical and/or theoretical character, which is to be presented in writing and orally.

Course content:
The course starts with an introduction to biology, among other things are treated : history of biology in short, biological basic notions, systematic and nomenclature and evolution (the earth's and life's evolutionhistory, the evolution theory). Cell biology treats "eukaryota" cells' basic structure and function, among others are cell membranes studied as well as organeller, cytoskeleton and cell motion, cellular communication and extracellular matrix. The course gives also an introduction into biological laboratory work, where you learn how to handle biological material and apply established methods and instruments, amongst others lightmicroscope.
