MASTER'S PROGRAMME IN WIRELESS NETWORKS AND ELECTRONICS 120 ECTS credits

Aim/vision The Master's programme in Wireless Networks and Electronics is strongly aimed to foster a multi-disciplinary engineering approach that is required to develop future wireless communication systems. Ranging from electromagnetic propagation and communication electronics system design to wireless network simulation and planning, the scope of the program is broad. After completing the Master's programme Wireless Networks and Electronics, the students will have deep knowledge in radio frequency (RF) electronics, antenna theory, signal processing, wireless network engineering and networking, as well as the interaction between these subjects.

The focus of the program goes beyond the electronic component level. The starting point is radio frequency electronics and wireless communication theory. The main objective of the programme is to provide training in fundamental aspects of RF electronics and telecommunications, and to combine the knowledge with a deep understanding of wireless electronic systems design, wireless networks, and network simulation.

The program is intended for students with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering seeking deeper knowledge in wireless electronic systems and networks using state-of-the-art design and modelling tools.

Disposition of the Programme

The programme consists of 1.5 years (3 semesters) of course work and a Master's Thesis (0.5 years), and starts in August/September each year.

The first 1.5 years is dedicated to a set of mandatory and elective courses. After completing courses corresponding to 90 ECTS credits, the candidates proceed with their Master's thesis work corresponding to 30 ECTS credits.

Content of the Programme

The first autumn semester gives an introduction to fundamental telecommunication theory and RF electronics as well as project management and semiconductor technology. The following spring semester includes introduction to wireless networks and a deeper understanding of RF system design. This semester also includes several elective courses, such as analog and digital system design, digital signal processing, and data communications and computer networks.

The courses in the second autumn semester are closely connected to the research groups Communication Electronics and Mobile Telecommunications. This semester include further studies in e.g. wireless network theory, wireless network simulation, antenna theory and microwave engineering. Since a large part of the courses are elective, the actual profile will vary dependent on individual choices. The last semester is devoted to a Master's thesis.

Master's Thesis

The thesis should be based on the high quality scientific content and carried out in close contact with the research groups involved in the programme and in the area of the profile chosen by the students. Without special permission a thesis work may be performed in the following subject areas:

  • Communication Electronics

  • Electronic Devices
  • Communication Systems
  • Electronics Systems

Requirements for a degree

The programme is designed to give the Master's Degree "Teknologie masterexamen i elektroteknik" translated to "Master of Science (Two Years) with a major in Electrical Engineering".

The requirements are the following:

  • a Bachelor's degree as specified in the entrance requirements
  • course requirements for a total of 120 ECTS credits from courses from the curriculum for the programme or after special decision from the programme board and thesis work.
  • passed the requirements for all compulsory courses
  • courses on advancement level A (advanced) 90 ECTS credits including:
    • at least 30 ECTS credits courses from the major subject
    • a 30 ECTS credits Master's Thesis in the major subject
  • at least 45 ECTS credits from courses in mathematics or applications of mathematics from the Bachelor level (basic) or Master level (advanced), see list of specific courses
  • a Master's thesis presented and passed as per Linköping Institute of Technology degree regulations
Courses overlapping each other regarding contents are not allowed to be included in the degree. Courses used for the Bachelor's degree can never be included in the Master's degree.
