MASTER'S PROGRAMME IN SYSTEM-ON-CHIP 120 ECTS credits
Aim/vision
The System on Chip (SoC) Master program educates specialists who are ready to work on the forefront of modern IT technology. A SoC master will understand the needs of modern industry and society and contribute, in a creative way, with new solutions, to solving these problems.
A SoC master will also be prepared to pursue a scientific career by, for example, continuing his/her education towards a PhD degree.
Programme goals
- Knowledge and reasoning in mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering
Graduates from the Master's programme in System-on-Chip
- will be equipped (depending on the selected courses) with skills in at least two of the following three areas: digital design, analog and mixed-signal design, and embedded software. These skills, beyond those provided by a traditional electrical engineering curriculum, will allow the SoC master to understand, formulate, and solve the complex problems related to the design of sophisticated electronic systems and, in particular, systems on chip.
- Personal and professional skills and attributes:
Graduates from the Master's programme in System-on-Chip
- should be able to formulate a model for a relevant problem and critically evaluate its validity.
- will be able to approach new problems in a creative way and to apply advanced methods in order to solve them.
- based on a solid theoretical knowledge, practical engineering skills and an understanding of modern design tools and methodologies the SoC masters will be able to find practical and efficient solutions to specific problems in the areas of electronic systems and embedded applications. He/she will be able to evaluate alternative solutions, make quantitative and qualitative estimations and take decisions based on a solid understanding of the area.
- Interpersonal skills: Teamwork and communication:
Graduates from the Master's programme in System-on-Chip
- should qualified to take a leading role in a design and development team, evaluate and compare solutions, and take decisions. He/she will be able to further deepen his/her knowledge and contribute to the development of the area.
- is prepared to work as part of a team, cooperate with other specialists and act towards the solution of complex technical problems.
- has the ability to present technical and scientific results, both orally and in written form
- Conceiving, designing, implementing, and operating systems in the enterprise and social context:
Graduates from the Master's programme in System-on-Chip
- should have a deep insight into the broad field of science and engineering from initial concepts to implementation aspects.
- should be aware of the impact of science and engineering on society.
Disposition of the Programme
The programme consists of 1,5 year (3 semesters) of course work and a Master's Thesis (0,5 years), and starts in August/September each year.
The first 1,5 year is dedicated to a set of mandatory courses, and optional. These courses are part of the ordinary syllabus for final year students majoring in computer science and engineering and electrical engineering. After completing courses corresponding to 90 ECTS credits, the candidates proceed with their Masters' Thesis work corresponding to 30 ECTS creditscredits.
Content of the Programme
The programme is based on fundamental mathematical, theoretical, and technical knowledge acquired by the student during his/her basic undergraduate education at Bachelor's level.
The SoC master program provides education, both theoretical and applied, in the areas of digital and analog electronics, digital design, VLSI systems, and embedded software. A number of obligatory courses will provide the student with the broad view and understanding needed in order to master the area. At the same time, a proper selection of optional courses allows specializing in a particular direction, such as analog/RF design, digital design, or embedded systems.
Communication skills, presentation techniques (both oral and written), as well as team work, are emphasized during the whole program.
There are certain possibilities for students to exchange courses (for example if a student in previous studies has read a course that corresponds to a course within the program) or add courses after consulting the programme director, and decision in the Board of Studies.
Master's Thesis
The thesis should be based on the high quality scientific content and carried out in close contact with the research groups involved in the programme. Without special permission a thesis work may be performed in the following subject areas:
- Image Processing
- Image Codeing
- Biomedical instrumentation
- Computer Science
- Datatransmission
- Computer Systems
- Computer Engineering
- Electronic Devices
- Electronics Systems
- Communication Systems
PhD courses in the programme
Certain PhD courses can be taken by master students. Please contact the directors of graduate studies:
In order to include graduate course in the degree the student must apply to the Board of Studies
Requirements for a degree
The programme is designed to give the Master's Degree "Teknologie masterexamen i elektroteknik" translated to "Master of Science (Two Years) with a major in Electrical Engineering".
The requirements are the following:
- a Bachelor's degree as specified in the entrance requirements
- course requirements for a total of 120 ECTS credits from courses from the curriculum for the programme or after special decision from the programme board and thesis work
- passed the requirements for all compulsory courses
- courses on advancement level A (advanced) 90 ECTS credits including:
- at least 30 ECTS credits courses from the major subject
- a 30 ECTS credits Master's Thesis in the major subject
- at least 45 ECTS credits from courses in mathematics or applications of mathematics from the Bachelor level (basic) or Master level (advanced), see list of specific courses
- a Master's thesis presented and passed as per Linköping Institute of Technology degree regulations.
