MASTER'S PROGRAMME IN MANAGEMENT OF INNOVATION AND PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT 120 ECTS credits

Aim/vision

World-class engineers need to be able to meet increasing demands in terms of managing innovation and product development. In the global economy, it is crucial that firms are able to develop and commercialize innovative products and solutions; for example by acquiring and developing new knowledge areas or participating and collaborating in networks. Management of innovation and product development is not only of utmost importance for large established companies but also vital for smaller and entrepreneurial start-up firms.

The Master programme Management of Innovation and Product Development aims to prepare engineers for future key positions in product development activities, such as project/line managers in an established firm or project/business managers in start-up firms building on new product ideas. Important domains of study are central activities and processes in innovation, such as technology management, product development, project management and entrepreneurship.

Programme goals

A Master of Science in Management of Innovation and Product Development is able to independently and critically understand, utilize and implement key insights into managing innovation and product development. This includes the ability to understand, analyze, and apply theories, tools and techniques based on science and best practice. In addition, since management of innovation and product development is a highly practical field, MSc graduates in Management of Innovation and Product Development have an in-depth understanding of and are able to propose interventions concerning complex phenomena and problems related to innovation and product development processes in real-life industrial companies.

Composition of the Programme

The programme consist of 2 years of studies for a Master of Science degree (120 ECTS credits). The first semester consists of compulsory courses. The second and third semester contain compulsory as well as several facultative courses. During the final semester of the programme a Master Thesis project is performed entailing 30 ECTS credits.

Content the Programme

The programme consists of a package of courses covering important areas for managing innovation and product management. Three courses are core to the area of management of innovation and product development. These include:

  • Innovation management and product development
  • Innovative entrepreneurship
  • Advanced project work
  • Product development

Compulsary courses providing the context, background and practical ability to perform studies into the field of management of innovation and product development involve:
  • Corporate organization
  • Industrial project management
  • Leadership and organizational change
  • Philosophy of science and research methodology
  • Introduction to advanced academic studies

Additional courses are studied in the field of applied mathematics and facultative courses in related fields of studies.

Master Thesis

The thesis should include high quality scientific research within a specific research area in field of Management of Innovation and Product Development. Subject areas for the thesis work are subject for later decision.

Requirements for a degree

The programme is designed to give the Master's degree "Teknologie masterexamen med huvudområdet Industriell ekonomi", translated to Degree of Master (Two Years) of Science with a major in Industrial Engineering and Management.

The requirements are the following:

  • a Bachelor's Degree or similar
  • courses on advancement level A (advanced) 90 ECTS credits including:
    • at least 30 ECTS credits from the major subject
    • a 30 ECTS credits Master's thesis in the major subject
    • at least 45 ECTS credits from courses in mathematics or application of mathematics from the Bachelor's level (basic) or Master's level (advanced), see list of specific courses
    • a Master's thesis examined at the Institute of Technology at Linköping University
