SOCWARE - INTEGRATED SYSTEMS FOR COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA

Aim

The aim of the programme is to provide the students with more interdisciplinary skills than a regular Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering curriculum. These skills are needed for the design of embedded systems consisting of analog/RF ASICs, digital ASICs and embedded software. Each student is expected to master at least two of these topics, including their interfaces. Importance is also given to the partitioning of a system and being able to make a trade-off between different solutions.

The programme serves as a solid basis for either a career as a skilled Socware engineer in industry, or for further studies as a PhD student at Linköping university.

Composition of the Programme

The programme consists of 1 year (2 semesters) of course work and a Master's Thesis (0,5 years), and starts in August/September each year.

The first year is dedicated to a set of mandatory courses (about 23 credits points/34,5 ECTS credits), and optional courses (corresponding to about 17 credit points/25,5 ECTS credits). These courses are part of the ordinary syllabus for final year students majoring in computer science and engineering. After completing courses corresponding to 40 p/60 ECTS credits, the candidates proceed with their Masters' Thesis work (corresponding to 20p/30 ECTS credits).

The Content of the Programme

The syllabus for the programme may vary from year to year, but the main structure remains. The programme consists of a set of mandatory courses and a selection of optional courses. The total number of course points has to reach a minimum of 40 p/60 ECTS credits, se the curriculum.

There are certain possibilities for students to exchange courses (for example if a student in previous studies has read a course that corresponds to a course within the program) or add courses after consulting the programme director, and decision in the Board of Studies.

Finally, to complete the master's degree, a thesis, see below, lasting about one semester must be completed.

Thesis work is expected to be carried out under the supervision of a faculty member at one of the following groups that are jointly responsible for the programme:

  • Computer Engineering
  • Electronic Devices
  • Electronics Systems
  • Embedded Systems Laboratory
All groups are characterized by an internationally well recognized research profile in computer science and electrical engineering. Information about the research activities is available on their home pages.

The work may include collaboration with other Master Thesis projects although each project is clearly defined and carried out independently with support of individual tutorage. The assignment is done by the student and overlooked and guided by the supervisor and in close contact to the research and/or developing-frontier of the subject. Finally the student will present a written report as well as defend the work by an oral presentation.
