TNK006 Communication Systems Environment, 5 p (sw)

Aim:
The course aims at providing insight into the interplay between the communication systems and their environment. The course will: - provide knowledge of the historical development and mediate different perspectives on communication and transport systems; - provide knowledge of environmental problems related to transportation, primarily pollution, noise and so called hazardous goods, and what measures that are available to improve the situation; - illustrate the transport safety from a systems perspective and give insight into the relation between the components of a transport system - road, vehicle, and the user - and which measures can be taken to improve the safety.

Course organization:
The course consists of lectures, seminars and group work.

Course content:
The course consists of the following parts: The first part will: - communicate a historical and a culture-comparative perspective by the study of communication and transport in different epochs and different cultures. - provide a social-science perspective focussing on our own era and raising questions about time and space. Why are we travelling? What is tourism? The second part will primarily treat two important policy goals for the society in the transportation area: - environment (environmental problems in a global perspective, the environmental impact from the transportation systems, the air pollution problem, measurement issues, and structural, physical, technical and behavioural measures to decrease environmental impact); - safety (a system perspective, primary and secondary problems, accident statistics, methods for data assessment and analysis, technical and behavioural measures, safety programs etc.).
