TMMI55 Engineering Thermodynamics, 7 p (sw)
/Tillämpad energiteknik/

Advancement level:
B

Aim:
The course is an introduction to engineering fluid mechanics, applied thermodynamics and heat transfer. It gives knowledge required for use of formulae with respect to flow of liquids and gases in mechanical (engineering) constructions. The purpose of this course is also to give an understanding of principles of energy conversion processes as well as thermal phenomena in mechanical and production processes.

Prerequisites:
Calculus, Algebra and Mechanics.

Supplementary courses:
Modelling and Simulation - Energy

Course organization:
The course is divided into two parts Applied thermodynamics and fluid mechanics Oil hydraulics and pneumatics The teaching consists of lectures, classes and laboratory exeercises.

Course content:
Part: 1 Applied thermodynamics and fluid mechanics Introduction. Basic equations for fluids in motion. The Bernoulli equation with applications. Laminar and turbulent flow. Pipe flow. Forces on a body in a moving fluid. Compressible flow in nozzles. Flow and friction phenomena. First and second laws of thermodynamics applied to technical processes. State diagram for real fluids. Basic theories for heat transfer. Heat conduction, free and forced convection, and radiation. Overall heat transfer. Heat exchangers. Steam power plants, refrigeration cycles, heat pumps, compressors and gas turbines. Part 2: Oil hydraulics and pneumatics This part of the course gives in-depth knowledge on machines, valves and other components for transfer of fluid energy. It also gives knowledge in the principles of control of fluid systems. The sections of this course concerning hydraulic and pneumatic transfer of energy deal with the function of different components, the structure of systems and methods of calculation for steady-state analyses. Control technology deals with principles for control of fluid energy in different kinds of systems, for example load-sensing hydraulic systems and hydrostatic transmissions. In the field of control technology of pneumatics the following areas are studied; principles for direction of speed and directions of sequence for cylinders. This part of the course also includes laboratory exercises where the qualities of components and systems are shown experimentally.

Course literature:
Publications from Linköping Institute of Technology, LiTH, and from Chalmers Institute of Technology, CTH, Göteborg.

Course language is Swedish.
