TMME02 | Engineering Mechanics, 9,5 p (sw) /Mekanik M/ Advancement level: B
Aim: To familiarize the students with the basic laws within classical mechanics and the skill to apply the laws independently to concrete mechanical problems. Prerequisites: Upper secondary school mathematics and physics (science or technology lines). Three dimensional vector algebra is studied during the first term of the algebra course before the start of the mechanics course. Differential and integral calculus are studied both before and concurrently with the mechanics course. Supplementary courses. TMME Structural dynamics, Aeromechanics, TMAS missile engineering, RMIIL Mechanics of materials, TMKT Elements of design, TMMV Mechanical Heat Theory and Flow. Supplementary courses: TMME40 Vibration Analysis of Structures, TMME50 Flight Mechanics, TMMT30 Robot Technology, TMHL Solid Mechanics, TMKT06 Machine Elements, TMMV20 Applied Thermodynamics and Fluid Mehanics.Course organization: The lectures cover important sections and can include not only theory but also illustrative experiments. Computational exercises are assigned in connection with the lectures.Course content: Part 1. Statics and vectors: an introduction. Review of elementary vectors. Reduction of force systems. Equilibrium of rigid bodies. Distributed forces. Friction. Principle of virtual work. Part 2: Particle dynamics: introduction. Newton’s laws, particle kinematics: rectilinear and curvilinear motion, fixed and rotating coordinate systems. Particle kinematics: Laws of force, impulse, energy, collision. Linear vibrations. Part 3. Rigid body dynamics: introduction. Plane kinematics: absolute and relative motion, instantaneous center. Plane kinetics: motion equations, work and power, impulse and momentum, moment of impulse and moment of momentum. General kinematics: translation, fixed axis rotation, fixed point rotation. General kinetics: moment of momentum, kinetic energy, momentum and energy formulations, gyroscopic motion. Inertia matrix. Course literature: A. Pytel and J. Kiusalaas: Enginering Mechanics Statics and Dynamics, Brooks/Cole Publishing Company.Assessment:
UPG1 A compulsory computer calculation (third part). An examination is held after each subcourse to assess the student’s knowledge. The examinations are designed in a problem solving format, with a maximum score of 15 points. 6 points are passing. |
