TMKM04 | Engineering Materials Metals, 4 p (sw) /Konstruktionsmaterial, grk/ Advancement level: C | |
Aim: The aim of the course is to present basic knowledge about metallic engineering materials based on the principle of the relationship between structure and properties of materials and how that can be applied on engineering materials to understand their properties and their basic use. This knowledge should also be applied in communicating and solving industrial problems.Prerequisites: Basic knowledge in science and basic undergraduate courses in physics.Course organization: A lecture course (15h) with classes(18h) and practical work (18h)Course content: Introduction to materials science and engineering. Atomic bonding. Crystals, Disorder in solid phases, Phase equilibria. Reaction rates. Micro structures. Deformation and fracture, fatigue. Shaping, strengthening and toughening processes. Steels, Stainless steels, Tool steels. Cast iron, Aluminium alloys. Performance of materials in service.Course literature: Askeland Donald R.: The Science and Engineering of Materials. Course package containing excerpts and laboratory instructions. |
