TFYY64 | Advanced VLSI Design, 3 p (sw) /Avancerad VLSI-konstruktion/ Advancement level: C | |
Aim: The aim of this course is to give the student knowledge and experience in analog, mixed analog-digital and communication-constrained design. The primary objective of the course is that the student shall learn basic techniques for analog and mixed analog-digital design in VLSI, and gain further insight into System-on-Chip possibilities and limitations. Prerequisites: TFYY62 Introduction to VLSI Design and its prerequisites. Course organization: 11 lectures, 7 tutorials and 12 hours laboratory exercises. The course combines an overview of the area with careful treatment of selected parts; especially basic analysis of analog circuits (gain, stability, bandwidth, large signals and nonlinearity, noise and distortion) and transmission line theory, including RC-lines. Course content: Introduction to device and circuit modeling from an analog perspective. Brief introduction to analog circuit simulation. Small and large signal perspectives. Basic analog circuits: Gain stages, differential amplifiers, operational amplifiers, sample and hold circuits, oscillators, and phase-locked loops. Problems and solutions in mixed analog-digital circuits. Advanced wire modeling. Advanced issues in signaling, timing and clock distribution. Synchronous, mesochronous and asynchronous communication, and the use of phase-locked loops. Power distribution and supply and substrate noise. System partitioning related to communication and timing limitations. The scaling perspective and future prospects. Course literature: Not decided. |
