TFYY62 | Introduction to VLSI Design, 4 p (sw) /Introduktion till VLSI-konstruktion/ Advancement level: C | |
Aim: The aim of this course is to give the student knowledge and experience in digital circuit techniques and physical implementation of VLSI circuits. The primary objective of the course is that the student shall learn basic methods and techniques for physical implementation and verification, and gain insight into System-on-Chip possibilities and limitations. Prerequisites: Basic courses given for Y and D students: TSEA04 Digitalteknik, TSDT64/65 Krets- och mätteknik, TSEA19/20 Datorteknik and to some extent TSRT12 Reglerteknik (and thereby TSDT69/71 Kretsteori) and TFFY39/75 Elektromagnetism. Preferably the student has attended TFFY34 Semiconductor Technology. Course organization: 15 lectures, 10 tutorials and 12 hours laboratory exercises. The course combines an overview of the area with careful treatment of selected parts; especially the local design perspective on digital logic and timing circuits (considering performance, power consumption and robustness) and the global design perspective on synchronization (clocking principles and robustness). Course content: Review of basic semiconductor technology and basic modeling of devices. Review of CMOS processes and introduction to principles for circuit layout. Basic logic circuits, such as static and dynamic gates, latches and flip-flops. Introduction to wires and wire modeling. Modeling and estimation of performance and power consumption. Introduction to digital circuit timing and clocking. Logic blocks, arithmetic blocks, datapaths, control units and memories. I/O and chip packaging. Overview of ASIC design flow, including tools and methods for implementation (from logic synthesis to layout) and verification (estimation, simulation and testing). Course literature: Not decided. |
