Aim: This course gives an introduction to the fundamentals of electromagnetics, wave motion and physical optics, quantum physics and atomic, molecular and nuclear physics. Prerequisites: TFFM51 Principles of Physics, TFYY06 Engineering Mechanics D (TFFY60 Engineering mechanics)Supplementary courses: TFFY64 Molecular physics, TFYY01 Chemical surface physicsCourse organization: The course will be given as lectures, classroom exercises and laborations. Course content: Electromagnetics: Electrostatics, magnetostatics, time-dependent electromagnetic fields. Wave dynamics: The wave equation, refraction, interference, diffraction, polarization. Atomic and molecular physics: Atomic models, the Schrödinger equation, quantum numbers, the Pauli exclusion principle, molecular orbitals, molecular bonding, energy band diagrams.
