Aim: The aim of the course is to give a physical understanding of phase transformations based on a thermodynamical description that can be applied in materials science metallurgy, electronic device development design or construction materials engineering. Prerequisites: TFFY25 Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics. TFFY70 Physics of Condensed Matter part I Course organization: Lectures and laborationsCourse content: Crystal phases, defects in crystals incl. vacancies, interstitials and dislocations. Solutions and alloys. Atomic processes: diffusion and creep. Multiphase materials: thermodynamics, phase equilibrium, metastability, phase transformations, and precipitation. Mechanical properties of metals: elasticity, plasticity and fracture. Steel. Structure - property - synthesis relationships.Course literature: D.A. Porter and K.E.
