Aim: The course gives fundamentals of organic chemistry essential for studies in biochemistry and other fields of natural sciences. Prerequisites: Attended General Chemistry, TFKE03, Physical Chemistry TFKE08 Supplementary courses: Biochemistry, TFKE25 and advanced courses in Organic Chemistry Course organization: The theoretical part consists mainly of lectures. The lessons include problem solving towards reaction mechanisms. The experimental part consists of organic reactions and synthesis correlated to the theory. Course content: Chemical bonds, functional groups, nomenclature and stereochemistry. Chemical reactions such as substitution elimination, addition, oxidation and reduction. The study of these reactions include reaction mechanisms, reactive intermediates, energy profiles and kinetics. Spectroscopic methods of structure determination (IR and NMR).Course literature: Solomons and Fryhle: Organic Chemistry, 7 th ed. Compendium and Lab.instructions from the department. |
