Aim: The primary goal of this introductory course is to give an understanding of the fundamentals of modern physics.Prerequisites: TATM06 Calculus Y, TFFM55 Principles of Physics (TFFM02), TFFY29 Wave Motion and TFFY39 Electromagnetic Field Theory (TFFY37).Supplementary courses: TFFY54 Quantum mechanicsCourse organization: Lectures, exercises, and laboratory work.Course content: Course content: 1. The special theory of relativity. The Lorentz transformation. Length contraction and time dilation. Addition of speed. Relativistic momentum, force, and energy. Relation between mass and energy. 2. Quantum mechanics. Interaction between radiation and matter. The wave-particle dualism. The uncertainty principle. Wave packets. The Schrödinger equation with applications. 3. Atomic physics. The hydrogen atom, energy levels, quantum numbers, vector model, spectrum. Many-electrum atoms. Pauli principle, X-ray spectra, optical spectra, laser. 4. Molecular physics. Molecular orbitals. Covalent bond, ionic bond. Vibrations, rotations, molecular spectra. 5. Elementary solid state physics. Ionic crystals. Covalent crystals. Metals. Molecular crystals. Band theory.
