TFFY13 Modern physics D, 2,5 p (sw)
/Modern fysik/

Advancement level:
B

Aim:
The course gives an introduction and an overview of modern physics. The courserepeatedly demonstrates how wide areas of modern physics - the physics developed during this century - can be understood through a clear understanding of a few basic concepts and principles.

Prerequisites:
TFYY06 Engineering Mechanics D and TFFY75 Electromagnetism or correspondingly.

Course organization:
The course will be given as lectures (24h), classroom exercises (12h) and one laboratory work (4h).

Course content:
The course starts with a brief description of the classical physics background, i.e. a presentation of the problems that made the creation of a new theory necessary. This also gives an opportunity to provide a historical perspective on modern physics and to point out the bridges between classical and modern physics. The modern physics topics include: particlelike photons, wavelike particles, the Schrödinger Equation and quantum mechanics, quantized atoms, many-electron atoms, physical interpretation of the periodic table, solid state physics and modern semiconductor devices - the backbone of computers. Up-to-date knowledge of research and developments will be integrated in the course, including guest lectures on currently important issues in the fields of modern physics relevant to modern and future electronics for computers. The laboratory work concerns atomic physics.

Course literature:
"Concepts of Modern Physics" 5th Edition by Arthur Beiser; ISBN 0-07-004814-2

Course language is English.
