Aim: The course gives theoretical and practical knowledge on principles for storage and retrieval in modern database systems. Prerequisites: Basic knowledge in programming. Course organization: The course consists of lectures, exercise sessions and computer exercises. The exercises illustrate the principles för implementation and use of databases. The course concludes with a project where the course participants design their own databases. Course content: The course gives an orientation of databases and focuses on relational databases from a user perspective. Topics include basic notions in databases, methods for data modelling and database design, management of databases, query languages and data structures for storage of data in databases.Course literature: Elmasri, Navathe, Fundamentals of database systems (3rd edition), Addison-Wesley, 2000.
