TANA64 | Numerical Solution of Partial Differential Equations, 3 p (sw) /Numerisk lösning av partiella differentialekvationer/ Advancement level: D | |
Aim: The course provides basic knowledge about the finite element method for the solution of partial differential equations. The course also gives practical familarity with numerical computations on computers with examples taken from science and technology.Prerequisites: A basic course in numerical mathematics and physics.Supplementary courses: TANA 77 Scientific computations.Course organization: The course consists of lectures, tutorials and computer assignments. The theory is mainly presented in the lectures. The tutorials emphasize mathematical problem solving. In the computer assignments attention is concentrated on applications of the finite element method.Course content: Calculus of variations. Minimization problems. The Lax Milgram theorem. Mathematical models of physical phenomena. Galerkin's method. The finite element method for stationary and time-dependent problems. Error analysis and adaptive control. Direct and iterative methods for sparse linear equations. Termination criteria.Course literature: Will be specified in the course information. |
