NMAB16 Numerical Methods and MATLAB- a Survey for Natural Scientists., 5 p (sw)
/Numeriska metoder och MATLAB- en översiktskurs för naturvetare/

Advancement level:
B

Aim:
To give a broad overview of numerical methods for the solution of mathematical problems. Relatively little detailed analysis of the computational algorithms is given. Different methods are presented together with the principles used to develop them. Computer exercises using MATLAB shall illustrate the importance of a proper problem formulation and interpretation of results.

Prerequisites:
Basic knowledge of mathematics as taught in the first term of the mathematics program, NMAA12 Linear Algebra and the first part of NMAB13 Mathematical Analysis II.

Course organization:
The course consists of lectures, lessons and computer exercises. Participation in the computer exercises is compulsory.

Course content:
Fundamental principles in programming. Introduction to MATLAB. Data representation in computers. Floating point arithmetic. Different kinds of errors. Systems of linear equations. Linear least squares. Nonlinear equations. Interpolation. Cubic splines. Numerical integration and differentiation. Ordinary differential equations - initial value problems. Computer exercises with applications in chemistry/biology.

Course literature:
Michal T. Heath: Scientific computing: An introductory survey. A MATLAB guide.

Course language is swedish.
