Aim: To cover the following areas: Modern chemical separation techniques, mainly gas chromatography (GC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Mass spectrometry. Developing analytical methods. Trace element analysis Environmental chemistry Prerequisites: Approved NKEA11-13 General Chemistry 1-3, and attended NKEB21 Inorganic Chemistry 2, NKEB22 Organic Chemistry 2, and NKEB44 Analytical Chemistry 2, respectively. Course organization: Theory of mass spectrometry or chromatography are daily presented in two 45 min lectures. Some lectures are devoted to spectrometric problem solving. In the laboratory the students may use modern chromatographic and spectrometric equipment to solve analytical problems. Analytical methods for the analysis of environmental problems or consumption products are developed in groups of 2-3 students.Scientific papers and/or experimental results are presented orally in seminars. Course content: Part 1: Mass spectrometry concerning the function of the spectrometer, the most common mass spectrometric techniques, manual and computerised interpretation of mass spectra and combinations of chromatographic separation techniques and mass spectrometry. Part 2: Gas chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The development of analytical techniques in theory and practice.
