NKEB22 | Organic Chemistry 2 , 10 p (sw) /ORGANISK KEMI 2/ Advancement level: B | |
Aim: The course gives fundamentals of organic chemistry essential for further studies in the field of natural sciences. The course should give the student knowledge about chemistry of carbon compound, ts structure related to chemical and physical properties. The student will, furthermore, learn more about organical chemical reactions, as well as skills in basic organical analys and laboratory technology. Prerequisites: General Chemistry 1 and 2 (NKEA 11,12), Organic Chemistry 1 (NKEA 14) and Biochemistry 1 (NKEA15). Supplementary courses: NKEC53 Organic Chemistry and NKEC 52 Biochemistry Course organization: The theoretical part consists mainly of lectures. The lessons include problem solving towards reaction mechanisms. The experimental part consists of organic reactions and synthesis correlated to the theory. Course content: The course explains the chemical and physical properties of organic compound. Chemical bonds, functional groups, nomenclature and stereochemistry are covered. Chemical reactions such as substitution, elimination, addition, oxidation and reduction are treated in the aspect of functional groups. The study of these reactions include reaction mechanisms, reactive intermediates, energy profiles and kinetics. Organic spectroscopy, primary Infrared and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, carbohydrates and other natural products are studied along with biological applications. Knowledge of safety risks are included. The laboratory course give the student practical skill in organic synthesis, organic reactions and modern analytical and separation methods, such as NMR and chromatography. Course literature: Solomons, G.;Fryhle, C., Organic Chemistry, 7th Ed. Compendium and Lab.instructions from the department. |
