Aim:
The aim of the course is to give 1. A physical understanding of phase transformations with applications in materials science, physical metallurgy and materials technology. 2. Knowledge about modern analysis instruments and techniques for micro - structural imaging and chemical compositional determination.

Prerequisites:
Participation in Quantum Mechanics NFYD61, Solid State Physics NFYD62, and Material Optics NFYD77.

Course organization:
Seminars, laborations, and a field trip to an industrial laboratory for materials technology.

Course content:
Seminars: Crystal phases, structural defects in crystals. Solutions and alloys. Atomic processes; diffusion. Thermodynamics for phase equilibrium, phase diagrams, metastability, phase transformations, and precipitation. Mechanical properties of metals: elasticity, plasticity and fracture. Principles, construction and handling of instruments for structural and compositional analysis. Laborations: Light optical microscope. Scanning electron microscopy.Transmission electron microscopy. X-ray diffraction.
