NFYD73 Theory of Relativity, 5 p (sw)
/RELATIVITETSTEORI/

Advancement level:
D

Aim:
The purpose of the course is to give a good understanding of the principles and consequences of the special and the general theory of relativity.

Prerequisites:
Participation in NFYA31 Mechanics, NFYA32 Electricity, NFYA33 Electromagnetism and Waves, NFYB43 Atomic and Nuclear Physics, NFYC51 Mathematical Methods of Physics I.

Course organization:
The course is presented during 42 lecture-hours.

Course content:
The postulates of special relativity, Lorentz-transformations, highenergy dynamics, transformation properties of electromagnetic fields, the electromagnetic field tensor. Basic tensor calculus. The postulates of general relativity. Einsteins equations of motion, Einsteins field equations, Schwarzschilds solution of the field equations. The deviation of light in a gravitational field, The perihelion of Mercury and the gravitational redshift is computed and related to the observed data. Black holes, gravitational waves and an introduction to cosmology.

Course literature:
No particular book is followed, but R D'Inverno: Introducing Einsteins Relativity, Clarendon is a good choice. English translations of Einsteins most important original papers are handed out.

Course language is swedish.
