NFYC61 | Statistical Thermodynamics of Biopolymers, 5 p (sw) /STATISTISK TERMODYNAMIK FÖR BIOPOLYMERER/ Advancement level: C | |
Aim: The course aims to give an introduction to the physics of polymers, polyelectrolytes and biopolymers, to general phenomena which is dependent on the properties of macromolecules, and to the theoretical models which are used to describe this phenomena.Prerequisites: Thermodynamics (NFYB 44) Mathematical Methods in Physics (TFFY 02 or NFYC 51 & NFYC 52) or Mathematics and Statistics (NMAA 30).Course organization: The course is presented in lectures and seminars and is given in English.Course content: Examples of some simple polymers, polyelectrolytes and biopolymers; to interactions between molecules; polymer size, form and flexibility; the conformation of ideal polymers; excluded volume and electrostatic effects of polymers; conformation and denaturation of DNA. Polymer adsorption and the nature of polymers at interfaces. The effect of confined polymers and polymer adsorption on the interaction between surfaces: polymer bridging. The theoretical description of polymer phenomena.Course literature: Compendium at the department. References: Grosberg, A.Y. & Khoklov, A.R., Giant Molecules, Academic Press, 1997. |
