NFYC58 Quantum Mechanics and Molecular Physics, 5 p (sw)
/KVANTMEKANIK OCH MOLEKYLFYSIK/

Advancement level:
C

Aim:
The course should give a good understanding of the principles and concepts of quantum mechanics. The student should also become familiar with the most important methods and how to apply them to simple systems, including molecules.

Prerequisites:
NFYC51, Mathematical Methods of Physics I and NFYB43 Atomic and Nuclear Physics, or equivalent courses.

Supplementary courses:
NFYD65 Quantum Dynamics.

Course organization:
Lectures and problem solving sessions.

Course content:
The Schrödinger equation. Parity, symmetric and antisymmetric wavefunctions, the basic postulates of quantum mechanics, Hermitian operators, commutation relations and the uncertainty relations, angular momentum operators, spin, Pauli matrices, the Stern-Gerlach experiment, the Zeeman effect, time independent perturbation theory, the Stark effect, the variational principle, time dependent perturbation theory, selection rules, many-particle systems, the helium atom. Chemical bonding, diatomic molecules, rotation- and vibration spectroscopy. The conceptual problems of quantum mechanics, Bells theorem and Aspects experiment.
