NFYC56 | Solid State Physics, 5 p (sw) /FASTA TILLSTÅNDETS FYSIK/ Advancement level: C | |
Aim: The aim of the course is to give the students knowledge about the geometrical and electronical structures of solids and to give an understanding of different properties and phenomena that are related to the geometrical and electronical structure.Prerequisites: Mathematics 40 p and Physics 40 p with 25 p passed in each.Supplementary courses: NFYC57 Physical Projects and NFYD64 Solid State Physics and Surface PhysicsCourse organization: The content of the course is presented in the form of lectures at which also a selection of problems are presented.Course content: Geometrical structure of crystals. Direct and reciprocal lattices. Theoretical and experimental treatment of structure determination by diffraction. Crystal binding. Lattice vibrations. Dynamical properties derived from lattice vibrations: heat capacity, heat conductivity. Electronical structure of solids: Metals, semiconductors and insulators. Theoretical models of the electronic structure of solids: the free-electron model, the Bloch-band model.Course literature: C. Kittel: Introduction to Solid State Physics, 7th edition, J. Wiley and Sons 1996. |
