NBIC17 | Molecular Genetics with Applications, 10 p (sw) /MOLEKYLÄR GENETIK MED TILLÄMPNINGAR/ Advancement level: C
Aim: The objectives of the course are: - to present advanced information on the molecular mechanisms of the information flow between DNA, mRNA and protein expression, - to give a general knowledge about the organisation of the genetic material and about procaryotic and eucaryotic gene expression, - to teach practical methods in molecular genetics.Prerequisites: Basic program of biology (50p with a minimum of 25p theory).Course organization: The theoretical part includes lectures, seminars and discussion of recent literature. The practical part consist of short presentation of basic genetic techniques and their application in laboratory practice. Combination of various techniques will be needed for solution of the laboratory problems. Course content: Study of the molecular mechanisms of DNA replication, transcription, translation and processing of RNA. Gene regulation. Basic genetic techniques: methods for preparation and purification of nucleic acids and electrophoresis of DNA. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with application to the identification of bacteria, RT-PCR, transformation, transduction, DNA sequencing, in vitro mutagenesis, and gene cloning. Seminars will exemplify how application of recombinant DNA techniques have led to rapid progress in our knowledge about fundamental biological processes. Discussions about the ethical problems in molecular genetics. Course literature: Laboratory manual from Department of Medical Microbiology. Watson et al., 1992 (Reprint 1996). Recombinant DNA. 2nd ed. Scientific American Books. Brown. 1996. Gene Cloning - An introduction. Aktuell vetenskaplig, molekylärgenetisk litteratur. Laboratory manual.
