TNM026 Acoustics, 6 ECTS-points
/Akustik/

Advancement level:
C

Aim:
The course is of a theoretical nature and aims at giving students an understanding of acoustical phenomena and of acoustical terminology. At the end of the course the student should be familiar with fundamentals of acoustics and be able to calculate acoustical properties.

Prerequisites:
TNG010 Multivariable calculus, TNG012 Physical modelling

Course organization:
The course is given in the form of lectures, tutorials and laboratory sessions. The course is given in English.

Course content:
General introduction to the theory of vibrations and waves: longitudinal and transverse vibrations in solid media, eg. in strings, in bars and in membranes. This part includes a revision of harmonic motion: amplitude, period, the superposition principal and beats. Fundamental theory of sound: derivation of the equations of sound, speed of sound and the effects of media, resonance, damping, absorption, impedance/admittance, reflection, refraction, etc. Sound waves in structures: room acoustics, echoes and sound waveguides. Technical aspects of sound: principles of microphones and speakers. Types of microphones and their applications. Measurement techniques. Brief introduction to physiological acoustics: hearing and its limitations.
