Aim: The aim of this course is to provide the participants basic knowledge within the area of modern telecommunication systems. The course is intended to give an overview on modern telecommunication system’s infrastructure, system principles and functionality, to clarify which system components are necessary in order to achieve information transfer - technical methods and solutions, and to introduce the communication system architecture including low and high level protocols. The course also intends to provide a platform for further study within the area of data- and telecommunications as well as to give the participants a deeper insight in a certain subject of modern telecommunication through project assignments. Course organization: The teaching consists of lectures, exercises, seminars and a laboratory course.Course content: Basic system architecture for transmission of digital data. The OSI-model. Standards and organisations. A/D converting. Source coding and channel coding. Introduction to data encryption. Transmission media and infrastructure. Line coding and modulation. Utilization of transmission resources: connection types, transfer modes, multiplexing and resource allocation, access control, addressing and routing, traffic and network management. Introduction to LAN and WAN. B-ISDN and ATM. Internet protocols.Course literature: References will be given at the start of the course. | ||
