Aim:
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to calculate rigidity, states of stress and strain, and also predict the ultimate tensile strength for simple designs in composite materials with the help of computer software. The participants will also acquire knowledge of the production and testing of laminates, about general characteristics of various types of fiber composites and other anisotropic materials, as well as familiarity with some cases in which the unique qualities of composite materials are given practical applications. To gain knowledge of structures, properties and performance of lightweight materials and hydride materials.

Prerequisites:
For M: Algebra M, Introductory Mechanics of Materials, Introductory Engineering Materials, Engineering materials. For Y: Linear algebra I, Engineering materials 1. For J: Algebra III, Mechanics of Materials V, Engineering Materials I.

Course organization:
Instruction is carried out in the form of lectures (some of which are presented by guest lecturers) and large seminars. Computation assignments are also included.

Course content:
Classification of composite materials. Micro- and macro-mechanics of lamin, the basics of laminate theory, mechanical coupling, fracture theory, properties of matrix, boundary surface and fiber, computer exercises - laminate theory, calculation of individual laminate designs, calculation of hardening stresses, bulking, moisture pickup, weathering, short fiber composites, production and testing of fiber composites. Lightweight metals and their production. Properties and structure of aluminum alloys and wrought alloys. Alloys for casting. Magnesium and titanic alloys. Materials for lightweight applications.
