Aim: To acquire general knowledge about the historic, economic, cultural and social development in Sweden from the viking age to today with a European perspective which is of fundamental importance to understnad the Swedish society today and the role of Sweden in European history.Prerequisites: General prerequisites for university studies.Course organization: The course is organized as a series of lectures and seminars. The students are also required to complete a project. During the course an excursion will also be made.Course content: The introductory lectures present a general overview of the Swedish devolopment in political, economical, cultural and social terms from the viking age to the present day with a European perspective. This part of the course aims at emphasizing the longterm development from the development of political, economical, cultural and social processes. These historical trends form a basis for the next part which consists of a series of thematic lectures which, for example, treat topics as the power of the state and the church during the Middle ages, the devolopment and role of the mining industry in Swedish history, the development of the "Swedish model", nationalistic movements in Sweden and in Europe as well as the question of Swedish neutrality in Europe. The third part of the course consists of in-depth study which is conducted in a group of students. An investigative approach is thereby used and theoretical aspects are brought to the surface.
