TFYY70 Fundamentals of Surface Modes: Theory and Applications, 4,5 ECTS-points
/Effekter av ytmoder: teori och tillämpningar/

Advancement level:
D

Aim:
To increase the interest in physics, stimulate creativity and make the student aware of the far reaching effects of electromagnetic surface modes within a number of areas ranging from the physics of our every-day life to industrial applications and several modern advanced research fields.

Prerequisites:
TFFY 02 Mathematical Methods of Physics, TFFY 70 Physics of Condensed Matter, part I and TFFY 73 Physics of Condensed Matter, part II.

Course organization:
The lectures are given in English and include some problem-solving demonstrations. Each student is assigned a topic for an oral presentation in front of class. (Homework problems are handed out during the course, see TFYY71.)

Course content:
We study energy effects of the modes leading to surface energy, surface tension, capillary forces, van der Waals forces, Casimir forces, stability of colloids, wetting, adhesion, strength of composites, catalytic effects etc. Examples of topics covered are: Bulk modes, polaritons of various kinds; surface modes are derived for planar surfaces, spheres, ellipsoids, cylinders, wedges, needles; van der Waals interaction; methods to study the change of the surface modes from changes at the surface and surface sensitive sensors; a large number of applications.

Course literature:
Lecture notes

TEN1Written examination with theory questions and possibly some simple problems to solve, plus one oral presentation in front of class., 3 p.
