TFYY40 Introduction to Fourier Optics, 5 ECTS-points
/Grundläggande fourieroptik/

Advancement level:
C

Aim:
The course aims at giving basic knowledge in so called fourier optics. That is the of use 2-dimensional fourier analysis to describe propagation of wavefronts in optical systems. What are the physical limitations of the information that can be transferred; what are the toleranses (abberations); how to use optical systems for simple image fltering and processing. Examples of applications: beam steering, optical interconnection (2D), SLMs, holography.

Prerequisites:
TFFY39 Electromagnetism and TFFY02 Mathematical methods of physics.

Course organization:
Seminars and problem solving sessions. Examination in terms of home work problems. Laboratory worksession and possibly visits to external lab.

Course content:
2-dimensional fourier analysis - skalar diffractions teory - Fresnel and Fraunhofer diffraction - frequency analisis of optical systems - wavefront modulation - analogue optical information processing - holography.
