Aim:
This course is designed to give understanding of the electronic structure of diatomic, polyatomic and polymeric molecules and to bring insight into electronic and optical phenomena in molecular materials, as a background to molecular electronics, including conjugated and conducting polymers, liquid crystals, organic nonlinear optical materials.

Course organization:
Seminars and laborations illustrate the central themes of the course. Written and oral presentation of homework problems.

Course content:
Basic quantum chemical and quantum physical properties of atoms to be used to obtain an understanding of the geometrical and electronic structure of molecules, macromolecules and polymers. Molecular electronics. Computer modelling of molecules and polymers. Electronic structure of molecules and polymers. Electronic transport (charge, energy) in organic materials. Polymer electronics. Molecular optics, with nonlinear phenomena and spectral hole burning. Bioelectronics: nerve conduction and receptor phenomena. The physics of photosynthesis.
