TFYY01 | Chemical Surface Physics, 4,5 ECTS-points /Kemisk ytfysik/ Advancement level: D | |
Aim: The course is intended to give a general introduction to solid surfaces and their physical-chemical properties. Two different categories of surfaces will be discussed, hard surfaces(materials) including metals and dielectrics, and soft surfaces(materials), e.g., polymers and molecular films. The role of solid surfaces for technological application of interest to the Swedish industry will also be presented in the form of a seminar series with invited lecturers. Prerequisites: Molecular Physics TFFY 64Course organization: Lectures 36 h and seminars 12 h. Course content: The course will be presented in three parts Part I deals will hard surfaces(materials) and the theory of adsorption phenomena onto such surfaces. * The structure of surfaces (metal, dielectrics) * The surface chemical bond, physisorption, chemisorption * Adsorption, adsorption kinetics and isotherms (Langmuir, BET...) * Analytical methods (LEED, XPS, UPS, IR, TPD...) * Applications: Gas phase reactions at surfaces, catalysis Part II deals with soft surfaces(materials) * Organic materials and molecular films, structures and properties * Preparation strategies (Langmuir-Blodgett, self-assembly, CVD...) * Forces between molecular systems and surfaces * Applications: Molecular recognition and sensors Part III contains a seminar series on surface chemistry/physics in technologically important processes, e.g., catalysis, nanotechnology, corrosion, flotation, organic synthesis at surfaces and sensors.
