Aim:
The aim of the course is to provide students with basic knowledge about materials in medicine, and problems related to the close apposition between non-self materials and blood or tissues.

Prerequisites:
Engineering Biology study year 3 (TB3) and TFYY01 Chemical surface physics, TBME60 System physiology, or equivalent skills.

Course organization:
Lectures, seminars, and project works.

Course content:
Definitions. Materials classes and their properties. General applications. Dental materials. Ophtalmologic applications. Titanium as a biomaterial.Physiology. Immune response (briefly). Protein adsorption. Coagulation- and immune response at interfaces. Tissue engineering. Surface modifications. Surface analysis. Biological analytical tools. Clinical relevance.
