Aim:
The student shall gain an understanding of the impact on the environment from large technical systems, such as transport, energy, and water handling systems. A holistic view of the environmental issues is applied as both resource and pollution problems are included. Further, the student shall be accustomed to ways of decreasing environmental impact by means of technical solutions. In particular, preventive measures are emphasized as well as changes in the technical systems for a development in a direction towards sustainability.

Prerequisites:
Environmental Science preferred but not compulsory.

Course organization:
Instruction is given as lectures, group assignments and visits to industries.

Course content:
Definition of sustainability. Measures to decrease environmental impact. The history of environmental pollution control. Systems for water supply and sewage treatment. Techniques and systems for handling of domestic and industrial waste. Environmental impact from process industries. Examples of goods production and environmental impact. Recycling. Introduction to design for the environment. Possibilities to reduce the environmental impact from energy systems. Environmental impact from transport systems and options for development.

LAB1Attendance at 3 educational visits. Attendance at the presentation of the assignments., 1,5 p.
