Aim:
To give knowledge about physical principles behind sensors and thus understanding of properties and limitations. Overview of sensors for measuring quantities of interest in industry and research.

Prerequisites:
Earlier basic courses in physics, mathematics and electronics.

Supplementary courses:
TFMÄ 34 Current topics in measurement technology, TFMÄ 12 Measurement system design, TFMÄ 77 Project work in measurement technology.

Course organization:
Lectures and experiments.

Course content:
Classification of sensors, sensor characteristica. Utilization of electrical, magnetical, mechanical, acoustical, thermal and optical phenomena and combinations of these. Dynamical models of sensors. Signal conditioning: amplifiers, transmitters, A/D conversion, data transmission, noise. Overview of sensors for measuring position, velocity, acceleration, force, strain, pressure, flow, temperature, humidity, sound, light, ionising radiation, magnetism. Chemical sensors and biosensors. Microsensors and sensor arrays.
