TFFY75 Electromagnetism, 4,5 ECTS-points
/Elektromagnetism/

Advancement level:
B

Aim:
The course shall give a basic knowledge of electromagnetics needed in engineering electromagnetics, and to develop skills necessary to solve simple electromagnetic problems.

Prerequisites:
TATM 72 Calculus, TATM 18 Linear Algebra and TFYY 06 Engineering Mechanics D, or equivalent courses.

Course organization:
30 h lectures, 16 h problem solving sessions, and 6 h laboratory lessons.

Course content:
Electrostatics: Coulomb's law, electric field strength, electric potential, Gauss' law, capacitance, electric dipole, polarisation, dielectric materials Currents: current density, mobility, drift velocity, resistance. Magnetostatics: magnetic flux density, Biot-Savart's law, Ampere's law, magnetic dipole, magnetisation, magnetic materials. Time-varying electromagnetic fields: induction, electromotive voltage, Faraday's law, inductance, wave motion, transmission lines, plasma frequency. Introduction to some applications, in particular chip technology. Computer simulations. The course repeatedly demonstrates how electromagnetic phenomena can be understood as specific applications of Maxwell's equations.
