Aim: Subject knowledge: The course gives basic knowledge about principles, methods, and tools for the definition and development of advanced information systems. This includes representation, organisation, and management of information and knowledge in distributed environments, information retrieval and filtering (for text and other media), and design of web systems. Also human-computer interaction, computer security, database technology, web technology, and adaptive systems and user modelling are included. Personal development: The course organisation offers the students the possibility for personal development. As well as the familiar skills offered in "traditional" projects, the students gain experience in the following: independent work, project work, comprehensive view, familiarity with the industry's way of working, literature search, and communication (oral and written). Prerequisites: TDDB 34 Object-Oriented Development of Usable systems or TDDB 61 Software Engineering Project from a wide perspective or TTIT 50 Project. Knowledge within the following areas is an advantage: databases, artificial intelligence, web technology, java programming. Course organization: Project work, lectures, seminars, and supervisor meetings. Course content: Techniques and models for retrieval and filtering of information. Forms of representation for different media and their importance for retrieval and filtering. Query languages for information retrieval. Data structures for retrieval and filtering (for example inverted files, signature files). Text indexing, ranking algorithms, stemming, thesaurus. Forms of interaction. Interaction design: methods and techniques. Layout techniques for information systems. Adaptive systems and user modelling. Web design, use of web server technology.
