Aim: The course is intended to give students the necessary mathematical skills needed for studies in chemistry, particularly physical chemistry. The course is intended to teach students to understand and use basic probability and statistics. Prerequisites: Admission to the chemistry programme. Course organization: Lectures and problem classes. Theory is followed up by problem-solving by the lecturer. A revision course of secondary school mathematics is offered to students during the last week of August. Course content: Analysis: Real and complex numbers . Binomialtheoreme. Induction. The elementary functions. Differentiation and extremal values. Curve sketching. Numerical equation solving. Maclaurin series. Integral calculus and ordinary differential equations. Functions of several variables. Partial derivatives. Gradient and differential. Linear algebra: Matrices and determinants. Matrix inverse. Systems of linear equations. Eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Matematical statistics: event space, events and probabilities. Combinatorics. Conditional probability and independent events. Stochastic variables and their probability distributions: exponential, normal, binomial, och Poisson distributions. Expectation value and standard deviation. Central limit theorem. Descriptive statistics. Point estimation of Expectation value and standard deviation. Confidence interval. Hypothesis testing. Chi-squared test. Simple linear regression.
