NKED78 | Inorganic Chemistry, 7,5 ECTS-points /Oorganisk Kemi/ Advancement level: D | |
Aim: The aim of the course is to give in-depth knowledge of modern inorganic chemistry, particularly inorganic synthesis and characterisation. Emphasis will be laid on inorganic reaction mechanisms, chemical bonding, structural chemistry and complexes. Prerequisites: Inorganic Chemistry 2 (NKEB 21), Organic Chemistry 2 (NKEB 22), Physical Chemistry 2 (NKEB 33), Mathematics and Statistics (NMAA 30), or equivalent. Course organization: The course consists of lectures, lessons and laboratory exercises. The experimental part may to some extent be carried out in the form of a project ending with an oral presentation. Course content: This is an advanced-level course in general inorganic chemistry dealing with the following topics: the electronic structure of hydrogenic and non-hydrogenic atoms (Aufbau Prinzip); molecular orbital theory for molecules consisting of two or more atoms; group theory as a tool in understanding molecular shapes and symmetries; properties and reactions of the s-, p-, d-, and f-metals; properties and reactions of hydrides, boranes, and silanes; properties and reactions of oxides, nitrides, and halides. Crystal structures of solids and the relationship between structure and physical and chemical properties. Complexes of the d-block elements, their reactions and electronic spectra (IR, UV-VIS, EPR).
