NKEC67 | Materials Chemistry, 7,5 ECTS-points /MATERIALKEMI/ Advancement level: C | |
Aim: The aim of the course is to give a basic understanding of the relationship between the chemistry and the physical properties of inorganic solids. The important role played by chemists in modern materials science is emphasised. Prerequisites: Approved Inorganic Chemistry 2 (NKEB 21) and attended Physical Chemistry 2 (NKEB 22), Mathematics and Statistics (NMAA 30) or Mathematics 1 (NMAA 01) or equivalent. Course organization: The course consists of lectures, lessons and laboratory work (including demonstrations). The laboratory experiments will be carried out in the form of projects, which are to be presented at a seminar at the end of the course. Course content: Fundamentals of crystallography: symmetry, point groups and space groups, Miller-indexing, inorganic crystal structures. X-ray and neutron diffraction of single crystals and powders. Preparative methods such as solid state synthesis, sol-gel, CVD, hydrothermal synthesis etc. Bonding in solids and electronic properties. Defects and non-stoichiometry. Diffusion and ionic conductivity. Equilibria in solids and phase diagrams. Modern ceramics. Low-dimensional solids. Zeolites. Dielectric, optical and magnetic compounds. Superconductivity. Powder X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy will be demonstrated. In the laboratory course inorganic solids will be synthesised and the products will be characterised with respect to their structures and physical properties.
