Aim: The course is intended to give the student basic knowledge in the physical chemistry sciences. The areas covered are: Thermodynamics, surface chemistry, chemical kinetics, quantum chemistry and molecular spectroscopy. Prerequisites: Attended and approved NKEA14-15 General Chemistry 1-2, NKEA16 Organic Chemistry 1, NKEA17 Biochemistry 1 and attended NKEB21 Inorganic Chemistry 2, NKEB22 Organic Chemistry 2, and NMAA30 Mathematics and Statistics, or NMAA01 Mathematics 1. Supplementary courses: NKEC67 Chemical Bonding. Course organization: The theory is taught in lectures, lessons and laboratory work. A small project work is included in the course and should presented in a seminar. The course is divided in two parts: 1 Thermodynamics and surface chemistry; 2 Chemical kinetics, quantum chemistry and molecular spectroscopy. Course content: Part I: Thermodynamics and surface chemistry: Properties of gases, state functions. The first law and thermochemistry. The second law, the concept of entropy and spontaneous reactions. Gibbs energy and chemical equilibrium. Properties of mixtures and phase diagrams. Surface tension, surfactants colloidal systems and adsorption. Part II: Chemical kinetics: The rates of reactions and integrated rate laws. Experimental techniques. Temperature dependence of reaction rates. Elementary reactions and steady states. Reaction dynamics. Quantum Chemistry: The principles. Atomic structure, The chemical bond.
