NFYC73 Analytical Mechanics, 75 ECTS-points
/ANALYTISK MEKANIK/

Advancement level:
C

Aim:
The course describes advanced methods for treating problems in mechanics. Analytical mechanics makes the structure of classical mechanics transparent and is fundamental for a deeper understanding of quantum mechanics.

Prerequisites:
Participation in NFYA31 Mechanics, NFYB43 Atomic and Nuclear Physics, NFYC51 Mathematical methods of Physics, part I.

Supplementary courses:
NFYD65 Quantum Dynamics and NFYD73 Theory of Relativity.

Course organization:
The course is given in the form of tutorials.

Course content:
The variational principles of mechanics, Lagranges equations, Hamilton's principle and the equations of motion, theory of small oscillations, the analytical treatment of central force problems, canonical transformations and Hamilton-Jacobi theory, Poisson brackets. Action angle variables, canonical perturbation theory. Continues systems. Lagrange densities.

Course literature:
Goldstein, H.: Classical Mechanics, Addison & Wesley.
