Aim:
The course gives the participants a theoretical overview on mathematical methods and practical skills for applications in fields like wave physics, optics, quantum mechanics and solid state physics.

Prerequisites:
Mathematics 40p and Physics 40p with 25p passed in each.

Supplementary courses:
NFYC52, Mathematical Methods for Physics, part II.

Course organization:
Lectures, exercises and problem solving.

Course content:
The course includes vector analysis, Gauss's and Stoke's theorems, potential theory, Helmholtz theorem. Vectordifferential operators in polar and spherical coordinates. Sturm-Liouville systems, complete sets of orthogonal functions. Linear partial differential equations. Separation of variables. Linear differential equations. Cylindrical and spherical Bessel functions. Legendre functions, associated Legendre functions. Spherical harmonics, expansion of Legendre functions in spherical harmonics. Multipole expansion.
